Flame in the Mist machte mich vor allem neugierig, weil es als Nacherzählung von Mulan in Japan beworben und gefeiert wurde. Tatsächlich ist das Setting zwar an Japan angelehnt und die Ortsnamen stimmen, aber mehrere Aspekte ließen keinen Zweifel, dass der Roman eher fantastisch als historisch aufgezogen ist. Diese Entdeckung freute mich sehr, denn asiatisch angehauchte Fantasy ist eine Seltenheit.Letztendlich war ich dann doch hin- und hergerissen. Mariko ist eine wunderbar starke Heldin, sie verlässt sich nicht auf die Männer in ihrem Umfeld, sondern denkt für sich selbst, ist schlagfertig und sarkastisch, hat kreative Ideen. Sie hat aber auch Schwächen und hält sich selbst nicht für unfehlbar. Besonders gefiel mir ihr Hang zum Handwerk und ihr erfinderisches Talent – Dinge, die nicht typisch für eine Heldin sind und Mariko noch origineller machen. Ihre Beziehung zu den Rōnin, allen voran natürlich Ōkami, war spannend zu beobachten und entwickelte sich sehr realistisch von Misstrauen zu Kameradschaft.Zu Anfang soll Mariko mit einem Sohn des Kaisers verheiratet werden und reist auf dem Weg zur Hauptstadt durch einen unheimlichen Wald, wo ihre Gruppe überfallen und niedergemetzelt wird. Mariko kann als einzige entkommen und schwört daraufhin, die Banditen zu finden und ihre Motive in Erfahrung zu bringen. Ahdieh schafft einen angenehmen Lesefluss und platziert Überraschungen an den richtigen Stellen, sodass die Spannung nie abebbt. Auch ihre Beschreibungen waren wunderschön und haben mich noch tiefer in Marikos Welt hineingezogen.Ein Kritikpunkt hat mich jedoch immer wieder gestört. Da ich mich gut mit japanischer Kultur auskenne, gab es einige Dinge in Flame in the Mist, die für mich schlichtweg nicht realistisch waren. Der vielleicht auffälligste Aspekt war Marikos Mentalität: Beinahe von Anfang an kämpft sie um Gleichberechtigung und gliedert sich ohne Schwierigkeiten in eine rein männliche Gesellschaft ein. Ich kann mir schwer vorstellen, dass dieser Trick im japanischen Mittelalter funktioniert hätte, die Kluft zwischen Frauen und Männern war damals schlicht und einfach zu groß (hierarchisch, aber auch was die innere Einstellung betrifft). Alles in allem hatte ich nicht das Gefühl, dass die Charaktere wie Japaner dachten und handelten. Einige weitere Punkte deuten auf mangelnde Recherche hin, aber da es sich letztendlich um einen Fantasyroman handelt, können viele davon (bis zu einem gewissen Grad) entschuldigt werden.Das Lesevergnügen wird dadurch jedenfalls nicht gemindert: Auch ich habe bis zur letzten Seite mitgefiebert und hatte außerdem keinen Schimmer, dass eine Fortsetzung geplant ist. Der Cliffhanger traf mich mehr als unvorbereitet und ließ einige brennende Fragen zurück. Auch deshalb vergebe ich 4/5 Sterne für die Geschichte einer frischen und starken Heldin und die traumhaft gezeichnete Fantasywelt!

Too amazing for words. "Flame in the Mist" by Renee Ahdieh has it all...love, betrayal, suspense, action, romance, social criticism, feminism, fantasy and so much more.I loved the story, loved the clear pictures Ahdieh painted with her words that had me completely immersed in what was happening. The imagination necessary to create a story like this has me in awe and I don't think a review can do this book truly justice.I loved everything about this book, except the fact that it ended.Mariko was an amazing female character. Strong, smart, with a sharp mind, integrity, passion and a heart in the right place. There was nothing I would've changed about her...not a single thing. And that is rare for me with characters. I adored her for not giving up, for fighting, and for also being smart enough to question her opinion on things and being willing to change it with the right evidence.Then there was the Black Clan with Okami and Ranmaru....how could I not swoon for them. Especially Okami who was trying so hard to be the bad guy, but the good in him still shone through. I adored him and his personality. But to be honest, I adored most of the Black Clan. And Kenshin, Mariko's brother.None of the characters was one-dimensional. They were complex and complicated, they were utterly human. I liked that I couldn't stereotype them and that they continously surprised me.I better stop here or it'll be fifty pages of me swooning over this amazing book. I can't wait for the second one. Ähnlich wie in Disneys "Mulan" hadert sie mit der traditionellen Rollenvorstellung und fällt einen Entschluss, der ihr Leben unwiderruflich verändern wird und sie dazu bringt, viele Dinge zu hinterfragen.Die Geschichte entfaltet sich auf wunderbare Weise und zog mich durchweg in den Bann. Nach und nach offenbaren sich immer mehr Hintergründe und Geheimnisse rund um die kaiserliche Familie, den Dragon of Kai (Marikos Zwillingsbruder Kenshin), und den Black Clan, insbesondere dessen Anführer Ranmaru und seinen Stellvertreter und besten Freund Ōkami. Mit einem wundervollen Paar zum Niederknien und Träumen, das mich ebenso wie Shahrzad und Khalid in "Zorn und Morgenröte" vollkommen bezaubert und berührt hat. Die Autorin versteht es einfach, große Gefühle glaubhaft zu beschreiben. Jede Szene und jede Berührung zwischen den beiden habe ich regelrecht herbeigesehnt, mit ihnen mitgefiebert und mitgelitten und auf einen glücklichen Ausgang gehofft, denn es sind noch einige Hindernisse zu überwinden.Zudem liebe ich die Sprache und den Schreibstil. Zwar ein eher anspruchsvolles Englisch, für das ich auch länger brauche, aber es lohnt sich. Denn viele der Sätze und Passagen sind so schön, dass man sie gleich mehrfach lesen und genießen möchte. Dabei fließen zahlreiche japanische Bezeichnungen mit ein, welche dem Leser Japans Kultur noch näher bringen und die am Ende in einem hilfreichen Glossar erklärt werden."My heart knows your heart.
